mahfkuz I needed to write a word essay about the influences of Islam and Western culture in the story, and all I could come up with was one sentence: Naguib Mahfouz is a masterful writer.


Every sentence is chock-full of meaning, yet the story reads so smoothly that the meaning can easily be overlooked.
