A Perfect Proposal – Katie Fforde. Sophie Apperly is young, attractive, practical, domestic & totally unappreciated by her academic family. Following on from the recent Katie Fforde thead, I have just finished reading my free copy of her new book ‘A Perfect Proposal’. (Thanks Charlotte!). Fforde’s latest is a rambling, bighearted novel in which a young Londoner becomes entangled with a wealthy American family.

In this delicious romantic comedy, a young Englishwoman gets an unexpected proposal from a dashing American, but it’s not what you think. Sophie Apperly’s frustratingly dismissive family has never taken her seriously, but they do take advantage of her.

So when an old friend offers her the chance of a lifetime, she decides to swap Little England for the Big Apple, and heads off to the land of opportunity. From the moment Sophie arrives in Manhattan, she’s determined to enjoy every minute of her big adventure.

And when fate throws her together with Matilda, a spirited grande dame of New York society who invites her to Connecticut for Thanksgiving, she willingly accepts. When Luke arrives in England a few weeks later, Sophie hardly expects him to seek her out. With all the warmth and wit that have made Katie Fforde’s novels huge bestsellers in the UK, A Perfect Proposal is an irresistible tale of love and literature and the quest for a happy ending. In fact, they even offer her services to other relatives.

A witty romance with Bridget Jones appeal. Recently her old hobbies of ironing and housework have given way to singing, Flamenco dancing and husky racing.

She lives with her family, who treats perffct like a doormat. But then she gets the opportunity to take care of her Great Uncle Eric, where she just happens to find some papers that might make Sophie and all her relatives some major money drilling shares.

Her first night out is at a museum her friend works at, where she just happens to to rescue a rich, high society old woman, Matilda. But alas, Sophie can only stay in New York for ;roposal week.

She then goes back home, to her family that treats her like a doormat. And she spends a dull Christmas working and giving out gifts to family and friends. And so the Cinderella roles are reversed. She does buy him sneaker shoes and some hand-me-down clothes. And there is a good happily ever after ending. This was sweet romance book. I loved Sophie and Luke. The ending was a little slow in coming. But when it did, I really liked it.

Took them long enough to come to their senses. And this reminded me a little of the movie, Letters to Juliet film stars: If you liked that movie, then you might like this I think. Katie Fforde has the magical gift of engaging the reader from the first page, drawing you into the everyday lives of her characters, and keeping you there happily throughout almost pages.

That takes real skill. A Perfect Proposal was a good example of that skill. The story is pretty bland not much happens plot-wise and yet the heroine is engaging if a bit young and you find yourself rooting for her HEA. The supporting cast of characters was fun to read about, the hero was nice though a bit bland and one dimensional, and the settings were pleasant to read about. In all this was a fun, easy read. I’m not sure I’ll remember it a few days from now but it was a very nice ride and I was sorry when I got to the last page.

Can’t ask for more than that! A Perfect Proposal, indeed. Sophie’s self-esteem gets a boost when handsome and sweet after a bit Luke, seems to take a fancy to her, but when his corporate assistant, Ali, shows up, it’s clear he thought of Sophie as just a distraction away from his REAL girlfriend. However, together, they solve a mystery very important to his grandmother, the very wealthy, Matilda, while it’s Luke and Ali who aids in the quest Sophie’s set upon to prove herself to her own family.

Sophie tried hard not to fall in love with Luke, but the heart wants what the heart wants, doesn’t it? During a wild Cornwall flood and a supposed kidnapping, Sophie finds out what Luke’s heart wants. Along the way, other people in the story participate in either keep the couple apart or push them together: What’s not to love? It made me want to be young again, on the brink of choosing my husband.

It was frothy and fluffy, but had a real story and believable protagonists. It’s what signed up for and I wasn’t let down. This isn’t my favorite book by Katie Fforde to date, but I liked it a lot. I’m happy I read it and would recommend it to rom com lovers.

This book seems never to end! It’s all backwards and forwards about these two, frankly disinteresting, projects that the book could probably do without. Sophie, despite the author clearly stating that she isn’t stupid, actually does seem a bit stupid where it matters.

When she’s driving she says she takes a whole to figure out right and left, and she goes into complete dithers when she tries to make any meaningful decisions. She’s good at “useful” things like sewing, cooking and cleaning – meaning she’s completely out of date. The constant emphasis on how poor she is is also pretty grating, as she seems to have plenty of money to buy things in NYC but not enough to eat meals.

She’s as Mary-Sue as it’s possible for a character to be, and the coincidental meeting between her and Luke is the most cliched “meet-cute” since I don’t know when.

A Perfect Proposal by Katie Fforde – It’s Time to Read!

I know how it ends – there was no real conflict except that Sophie was poor and Luke was rich and she is basically an idiot. The young heroine, Sophie is a child being sent on one errand or another throughout the book by anyone who happens to need or want her services. Really like Katie Fforde and look forward to reading other books by her in the future. For this one, it will go to the Friends of the Library donation box tomorrow!!! One person found this helpful.
